Coast Guard helps 5 on boat off North Carolina coast

EMERALD ISLE, Carteret County - It is National Boat Safety Week and before you hit the waves, safety advocates across the United States and Canada are encouraging boaters to take caution.

They offered boat safety checks and talked with people, including kids, about having proper safety equipment on boats. "But we are always prepared to respond to emergency situations on the water". You can make an appointment to have your boat, kayak or paddleboard checked online.

The Coast Guard has helped a disabled boat with five people on board off the coast of North Carolina. Paddlecraft users are required to have, and preferably wear, a Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times, the release said. No injuries or pollution were reported, and the mariners were wearing life vests.

The U.S. Coast Guard launched a search Saturday afternoon after a 24-year-old disappeared in the water in the Matagorda area.
