In an incident that raises questions on the safety of women in Haryana and the preparedness of policemen in stopping such crimes, three men allegedly gang-raped a woman after throwing her nine-month-old daughter off an auto-rickshaw, causing her death, in Gurgaon near Delhi, the police said on Monday.
There were already two men on board, along with the driver, she told police.
As she resisted and her daughter started crying, they threw the infant out of the vehicle.
"We are investigating the matter as woman alleging gang-rape has refused to undergo medical examination", a senior police officer said. The baby died of head injuries and the mother's age is estimated to be 19 or 20, he said.More news: Oppo introduces R11 with dual cameras and Snapdragon 660 processor
India has a gruesome rape record, with its capital New Delhi registering 2,199 rape cases in 2015 - an average of six a day. However, later she told them that she was also raped by the three men. Authorities receive reports of about 35,000 rape cases every year, but advocates estimate the number of attacks much higher, with victims wary of how officials might deal - or not - with their complaints and the social stigma assigned to survivors of assaults.
Last month, police arrested a man accused of kidnapping, raping and killing his ex-girlfriend in the state.
In another case, a 10-year-old was found to be five months pregnant after allegedly enduring sustained sexual assault at the hands of her stepfather.
The girl was granted permission to have an abortion despite Indian law prohibiting termination beyond 20 weeks.
