Iran's Khamenei ordered missile strikes on Islamic State targets in Syria: Guards

Lavrov said the mechanism worked "quite well", adding: "The Americans represented not only themselves, but the entire coalition".

Senior Iranian officials had also put the blame for the Tehran attacks on Riyadh, saying Saudi Arabia was "promoting terrorist groups" in Iran.

They said hundreds of troops with dozens of armoured vehicles including tanks had surged into the Bir Qassab some 75 km (45 miles) southeast of Damascus towards the Badia region that skirts the borders with Jordan and Iraq in an assault that began on Tuesday. While Iran has other ballistic missiles it says can reach longer distances, Sunday night's launch appears to mark the longest strike it has launched overseas.

Israel and Iran are bitter enemies.

The Sunday strike, the first Iran missile attack targeting outside its territory since the end of Iran-Iraq war (1980-88), was in retaliation for the first Islamic State-claimed terrorist operation inside the territory of a chief adversary. The attack last week, which included shootings and at least one suicide bombing, was on Iran's parliament and the shrine of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic.

The U.S. responded forcefully Monday to the Russian threat.

Later on Tuesday, the coalition issued another statement confirming the killing of the self-proclaimed Grand Mufti of ISIS, Turki al-Binali who is originally from Bahrain. He rose to be one of the extremist group's leading ideologues.

Since then, the Iran-backed militias, estimated to comprise more than 60,000 fighters, have continued to attack the Islamic State, also known as Daesh, which has declared a Caliphate across swathes of Iraq and Syria.

Activists in Syria said they had no immediate information on damage or casualties from the strikes.

"So far, we only posted military advisors on the ground in Syria and Iraq", he said. With pro-Syrian government forces now between US -backed fighters at at-Tanf and predominantly Islamic State-controlled areas, any future offensive in the area will be hard. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters. The U.N. children's agency says the European Union has donated 90 million euros ($100.3 million) that will help provide critical services and support to Syrian refugees in Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey.

The truce that went into effect Saturday came after some of the worst fighting in months between rebels and pro-government forces.

A Guard statement carried on its website said the strike came from its bases in western Iran.
