Freeze faces questions about lawsuit, NCAA investigation

Houston Nutt files lawsuit against Ole Miss' athletic foundation

Houston Nutt files defamation lawsuit against Ole Miss

It marked a rapid rise under Freeze from the ignominy of a 2-10 record in Ole Miss' past year under Nutt to seven, eight, nine and finally 10 wins by the 2015 season. It included a handful of damning accusations. "His running around, I wish we could take credit for training him to do that, but that just comes natural to him", Freeze said. "We can look at what we do have as a blessing and set an example for how you go through hard times", Freeze said.

After two years working behind the scenes at his alma mater, Freddie Roach returned to the field earlier this spring when he was hired as Ole Miss' defensive line coach.

Nutt was the Ole Miss football coach from 2008 to '11. As Media Days performances by embattled coaches go, he did well. Freeze and AD Ross Bjork will soon meet with the NCAA's Committee On Infractions, but will then be forced to once again play the waiting game as they await the final decision.

Q: I was going to ask you who your starting punter was going to be, but I guess I'll ask you about your quarterback situation. Nutt says the school violated that agreement in a "smear campaign".

Yahoo! Sports reported on January 29, 2016, that MS received its Notice of Allegations from the NCAA, but the university did not release it publicly.

Breeland Speaks said, "That guy was a menace for us a year ago".

Per the complaint, the contract breach allegedly stems from: "certain false and defamatory statements made by and on behalf of the Defendants in connection with an NCAA investigation of the Ole Miss football program".

Mississippi, Auburn and SC will be the final three teams at SEC media days on Thursday.

"The culture that we've built at Ole Miss is very special, and I'm excited to be a part of it", said Javon Patterson, the team's starting left guard.

Freeze's frustration resulted in a suitable follow-up question later about who's to blame for having to talk so much about things other than actual football. The school self-imposed a bowl ban for this season but is fighting a charge that Freeze failed to monitor his program - a major violation.

"We have taken responsibility for the things we've done all along", Freeze said. He provided a couple of soft mea culpas during his time at the podium, but Freeze sounds more like a guy convinced that he's the victim in everything that has happened to his program. They're the ones who deserve this, and they've handled it better than anybody.

"This type of stuff doesn't really faze me", Patterson said. "And so I've got to look at myself, our staff, our boosters, our people and our players and try the best I can to manage that while we go through it".

Ed Orgeron coached Ole Miss for three seasons, and he was lauded for his great recruiting. It alleges that coach Hugh Freeze and other school officials created a "false narrative" in an effort to place primary blame on Nutt for the NCAA investigation instead of Freeze.
