If approved by the Senate, Brownback will work with foreign policy makers to preserve religious freedom worldwide as the head of the office of global religious freedom in the U.S. State Department. Though ideologically similar to Mr. Brownback, some expect him to take a more hands-on tack in partnering with lawmakers and brokering compromise.

Curry also asks USA citizens to write to their local senators on behalf of Brownback so this position can be filled quickly. "I am honored to serve such an important cause", Brownback said in a tweet as news of the nomination was breaking.

Rubio added that "Governor Brownback brings years of experience and stature at a critical time when religious freedom is under assault globally".

Brownback's communication director, Mileka Willoughby, said he would hold a press conference sometime tomorrow.

The 36-minute news conference featured a listing by Brownback of his accomplishments, including water policy, bringing the American Royal horse show to Kansas from Missouri, and changes to welfare eligibility created to encourage work.

Phillips said he anticipates Colyer will try to distinguish himself as an independent thinker and not follow in the footsteps of Brownback. "Religious freedom" is one of his top priorities, and securing it may require force.

Despite spending more than a decade in state government and more than six years as lieutenant governor, Mr. Colyer has largely avoided the political spotlight.

He and Moore both called for the Senate to swiftly confirm Brownback. "But this (the failure of the tax cuts) will be the policy that writes his Wikipedia page in a decade or so".

"I've been in discussions with the administration, and this is a topic that I care a great deal about", Brownback said. The 2012 policy cut income taxes across the board and eliminated taxes on certain kinds of business income.

"He did work hard to consolidate where it was necessary, and there were cuts made", he said.

Reports that Brownback would be nominated for a federal job circulated around the Legislature during the spring session, but he wouldn't say how long he had been in discussions with federal officials about various jobs.

Other religious freedom advocates applauded the selection of Brownback for the position. "And it ended up where it ended up", Brownback said.
