Choosing Cutler - over not only Kaepernick, but also a flurry of younger, less-retired quarterbacks - would be a sign that Gase wants familiarity above all else.
"I guess I know a different guy than what everybody else portrays", Gase said in May at Dolphins rookie minicamp. The Dolphins are waiting on more tests before make a decision on Tannehill, but they clearly view Cutler as his replacement.
Gase said Friday that surgery was an option for Tannehill, but there is no timetable for a decision. Per RapSheet, Cutler is Miami's "top choice" if Ryan Tannehill (knee) is ruled out for the season.
A potentially season-ending knee injury to quarterback Ryan Tannehill is bad news for the Miami Dolphins, but it could be an opportunity for his backup to shine.
Right now, Matt Moore is definitely the Dolphins starting quarterback should Tannehill be out an extended period of time. With Moore under center, the Dolphins went 2-1 down the stretch before losing 30-12 in the playoffs to the Steelers.
One source inside the Dolphins organization said that he thinks Tannehill is done for the season.
Cutler previous year was injury riddled much of the season - he had a hand injury and a labrum injury - and threw four touchdowns and five interceptions in five games. He made a lot of the things that we did look really good. Cutler has started 139 career games, including 102 with the Bears.More news: Republican makes first move to work with Democrats on healthcare
Offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains, who coached Cutler last season, initially had "no comment" when asked about Cutler, but relented when pressed lightly on the matter.
However, depending on Tannehill's injury, Gase could very well change his mind.
So, will we see Jay Cutler take the field this season?
Social media and sports talk radio has been on fire with Cutler-to-the-Dolphins speculation.
As for Kaepernick, it's not completely impossible that he signs with Miami.
