Doctson ready to prove his worth to Redskins after injuries

'OK' is good enough for Eagles

After week of heat, Eagles players cool Doug Pederson off with Gatorade bath

Eagles head coach Doug Pederson game-planned for the Washington Redskins previous year with one arm tied behind his back.

According to a totally unscientific locker-room poll at the NovaCare Complex, that will happen on Sunday, when the Eagles open their season on the road in what could be considered as close to a must-win game as can be in September. The final captain is second-year quarterback Carson Wentz. Even past year, the defense didn't disappoint too much on the road. Carson Wentz has to stay upright - and on the field.

There wasn't much hope the salary-capped Eagles would be able to land Alshon Jeffery, the best available prospect. And now, the regular season is due to start in just hours. Hey, they're no strangers to catching that ball.

No disrespect intended, but Wentz just didn't say that about any of the playmakers on last year's team. While speaking at Liberty University's convocation, Cousin explained he made the choice because he believes it was God's plan for him.

Among rookie receivers, former North Carolina star Mack Hollins could get some time on the field.

Cousins and his offensive line struggled big time against the blitz in training camp and in preseason games.

It doesn't matter who's running the ball for the Eagles. LaGarrette Blount is coming off a monster year with the New England Patriots where scored 18 touchdowns. Last season, running back Robert Kelley had 82 yards in receiving yards and a touchdown. The offensive line has to be on the same page as the running backs and tight ends when it comes to protection because Washington likes to send second-level defenders, which can be hard for the line to pick up if they come from depth. Head coach Doug Pederson chose to break from that mold because of the two days of practice they had with Miami leading up to their game.

"I think you can have a runner that you kind of hang your hat on", Pederson said. Like many other first games of the year, the opening line has jumped significantly since it was first posted. There were plenty of people around the league, however, who thought more highly of him than I did. "If it's Wendell, it's Wendell".

Worst near-pick-six on the first drive of the dang season: After Cousins and Pryor hooked up for a first-down completion two plays later, the Cousins caught a break on Washington's next series when Eagles linebacker Nigel Bradham dropped what should've been an interception on third down.

Right now, he's behind Terrelle Pryor and Jamison Crowder on the depth chart, but he can still have an impact if he's out there.

That puts the onus on the defense, which has two young starters at cornerback in 23-year-olds Jalen Mills and Ronald Darby.

When the Eagles reclaimed possession, Wentz's pass to Darren Sproles was deflected and intercepted by Ryan Kerrigan.

Howie Roseman made the Eagles a better team in the off-season. Norman's pass breakup was the first of several impressive plays by the Redskins' secondary. LJ can make a big difference on Sunday toward Philly covering.
