Offensive famine leads to an Iowa State loss

Iowa State QB Park takes leave from team for medical reasons

Sam Ehlinger got the QB call for Texas against Kansas State in a late Big 12 contest with starter Shane Buechele (ankle) banged up ... Until Saturday, that is. But it's fair to wonder if the Iowa State loss cancels out the potential gain the Sooners got from beating Ohio State on the road earlier in the season. Oklahoma NG Matt Romar missed his third consecutive game after suffering an injury early in the September 9 game at Ohio State.

But two incompletions and another pass that ended well short of a first down got Iowa State the ball back with plenty of time. Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said in a statement that he is not sure when Park will return, and he can not discuss specifics. He has 14 career starts at quarterback.

Once the Cyclones got closer, Mayfield threw a dart to wide receiver Marquise Brown, which was broken up by a couple Iowa State secondary players.

Sam Ehlinger made his third start for Texas, and through one half has played like a guy who should make a lot more.

Lanning recorded eight tackles, a sack, and a fumble recovery on the defensive side of the ball, and accounted for 60 yards of offense both on the ground and through the air.

Oklahoma led 24-13 at halftime.

And here is Oklahoma, whose clear path to the College Football Playoff is now ruined, as are its 14-game winning streak - longest in the nation - and 17-game Big 12 winning streak. However, the Sooners are averaging 5.75 yards per carry, led by Abdul Adams who's averaging over 10 yards per carry.

For a while, the early-afternoon time slot on Saturday looked rather tiresome.

Calling back the memories of Baker Mayfield's viral and controversial flag-plant at Ohio-State's 50-yard line, Iowa State defense back Evrett Edwards stuck the state flag of Iowa into the turf of the OU logo.

Instead, the Cyclones pulled off the upset as 31-point underdogs with a backup quarterback, a two-way quarterback/linebacker and a near-perfect second half that included touchdown drives of 94, 73 and 75 yards.

Making matters worse, OU moves forward with a new set of injury issues. It's a huge blow to Mayfield's Heisman hopes.

Iowa State's run defense has been a surprising bright spot for the Cyclones this season.
