"There's girls who have wanted to be in Boy Scouts forever", Looker says. A decision, Daniel Anderson, Chief Operations Officer for the East Texas Boy Scouts Council, says was made to better serve families.
"Girls would be able to join as cub scouts, in cub scout packs that would be single gender cub scout dens, but would be able to be a Cub scout as a girl", Mike Butler, scout executive explained.
The Girl Scouts aren't especially happy with the news either.
The Cub Scouts is a program for pre-adolescents that often leads to entrance into the Boy Scouts, but the decision goes further than letting young girls participate in Cub Scouts.
"If people come to us and say we'd like to start a program for our girls where our girls can earn the Eagle Scout rank, then we'll start that program with them". While they may not have been able to officially join, Steindl said many Boy Scout sisters would tag along on scouting trips or challenges.
"I think it basically would be the exact same, just there would be some girls involved", Damian says.
"Surely it will involve a few bumps as the program changes are developed and the kinks get worked out, but we know that Scouting works".
He said his pack already allows siblings, male and female, of pack members to take part in the group's events.
"I think it's good because it lets girls have a chance to do what boys do", Megan said.
Some people in central in think the expansion is a great idea, but they're interested to see how it will be implemented. She's a fourth generation scout, a long-time volunteer and now a leader in Moline.
In August, the president of the Girl Scouts accused the Boy Scouts of seeking to covertly recruit girls into their programs while disparaging the Girl Scouts' operations. That'll soon include girls starting with Cub Scouts, and later the Boy Scout program will be open to girls of all ages.
On the other hand, Anita King, committee chair for Cub Scout Pack 3 in Saginaw, said she is excited that the Boy Scouts are offering more opportunities for girls. "The precious time they have with their children are so meaningful", he said.
In 2016, the Sequoyah Council bestowed him with the Silver Buffalo Award, the highest commendation given by the Boy Scouts of America. Proud to be a Girl Scout!
"There's a lot of change going on in our nation right now and I think it was going to happen eventually it was just a matter of when". The Boy Scouts are developing a plan to accept older girls in 2019.
