(Per Gallup, more than 9-in-10 conservative Republicans approve of Trump.) Since Republican Party primaries see an over-representation of conservatives, that meant that Republicans eager to win reelection to Congress were less likely to turn on the president.

This election season, with all 100 seats up for grabs, saw Democrats make their most energetic push in years to gain ground against Republicans.

Murphy, who earned a fortune at Goldman Sachs before serving as Barack Obama's ambassador to Germany, delivered his address in the same spot as Christie in his 2013 re-electionafter Christie won big over his Democratic rival.

Chris Hurst, a former television anchor for WDBJ7 in Roanoke, left the station to campaign for delegate as a Democrat after his girlfriend, Alison Parker, and her cameraman were gunned down during a live broadcast in 2015. Shlost by 12 points.
