Southgate says England will take huge belief from Brazil and Germany draws

England vs Brazil: Southgate speaks about Neymar's worth

Southgate backing his rising stars to flourish against might of Brazil

The best central defender in England's squad by a bloody mile.

Southgate has been preaching the value of looking after the ball, of clever movement, of maintaining shape in defence and attacking with brio. Southgate urged his Young Lions to not be daunted when facing a star-studded attack - Gomez certainly rose to the occasion.

"I think that performance there tells me he's the future and that back three tonight were outstanding - Gomez, Stones and Harry Maguire". Still, that's only an insult by comparison to two excellent displays, and this was hardly a disaster.

"Eric has good tactical understanding on the field".

"It's something that's difficult to do with England because of the limited time we spend together".

An uninspiring affair against Brazil on Tuesday evening will have made for pleasant viewing for England head coach Gareth Southgate, who watched his side quell the visiting trio of Neymar, Gabriel Jesus and Philippe Coutinho.

Neymar, deployed for the full 90 minutes, seemed on a mission to damage the floodlights in the first half, but his compatriots slowly closed in on the target, drawing good saves from a pleasingly confident Joe Hart and rattling the post through Fernandinho.

"A lot of those appearances have been off the bench", the England boss said of the striker who has scored twice in 14 caps. We've come out with a really creditable result and found so many positives.

Jake Livermore is expected to join the pair in a midfield three. And he's captain, for now.

"I thought they were all excellent", Southgate said afterwards.

But there were also a couple of wayward punts into the stand and an occasional wander into dead ends.

The Manchester United striker has enjoyed a meteoric rise since making his club debut last season, going on to win the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Europa League titles. Today we played against a very strong squad, tactically, technically and physically. Given that doing so often involved having to beat at least two Brazilian defenders, Rashford can be pleased with his output.

"For someone like me it's a great experience to play at this level against a team like Brazil with the individuals they have", he told ITV Sport. If you have not played enough football, take the opportunity to play some!
