Holiday traditions continue with The Nutcracker at Bridges

Middletown is first stop for Albano's Nutcracker tour

DANCE/MUSIC | 'The Nutcracker'

The 29th annual Pinkerton Ballet Theatre production of "The Nutcracker" will entertain Carson City today through Sunday at the Bob Boldrick Theater.

According to a press release, the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra performs the beloved Tchaikovsky score live, and more than 90 local dancers join Eugene Ballet on the mainstage, coordinated by Alaska Dance Theatre. Whether you're obsessed with all things Sugar Plum Fairy or the snow scene is more your speed, we've got your first look at the holiday classic. Principal character artist Brandon J will perform as Mouse King and Dragon Master. Ballet San Antonio has written in several parts for non-dancers who will waltz and spin with the ballerinas.

Swearingen plays Clara in the ballet as well as a dew drop fairy and an Arabian dancer. The students have been preparing since summer at A Step Above Dance Academy in Batavia, which donated the rehearsal space, said Andersen, who teaches ballet there.

"I haven't had to perform a purely classical role in a long time, so that is certainly serving as a challenge; but just like "Nutcracker" is a tradition, a lot of the variations in "Nutcracker" are traditional", she said. Unlike small student recital productions, Albano's senior company combined with his ever growing, popular youth ballet, join forces with five of Connecticut's leading dance academies to showcase and underscore certain Albano variations, giving young dancers from around CT an opportunity and an experience of working alongside professional ballet dancers to live music.

When "The Nutcracker" first debuted in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1892 it was not well received. Marius Petipa, the reigning choreographer at the Maryinsky, fell ill, so the job passed to Ivanov.

The two-act Tchaikovsky ballet "The Nutcracker" has been a holiday staple in Anna Gonzales' life since she was 4 years old. Besides 30 company dancers, the Ballet brought along 12 second-company members and around 20 crew members and artistic and administrative staff.

How do you teach children to dance in this production? Pacific Ballet's dancers will greet attendees as they enter the theater. Tickets for "The Nutcracker" are $16 for adults, and $14 for seniors and children. Group discounts are available.

Both the adult-only (Thursday, November 30 at 8pm) and the family-friendly (Saturday, December 2 at 2:30pm) version of the concert offer an opportunity to get up close with the orchestra and dance to your heart's desire.
