Penn State moved up in College Football Playoff rankings Tuesday night following a 66-3 win at Maryland.
Clemson was already ahead and then added a win at 8-4 SC while OU beat 7-5 West Virginia, but I think Oklahoma's a slightly better choice. Alabama's nine Power Five victims are 53-54 this season, set against numbers such as that of Clemson (a marvelous 67-39), Auburn (54-30, with just seven Power Five victims but two top-tier ones in Georgia and Alabama), Oklahoma (57-51) and Georgia (57-49).
"The committee continues to be impressed with how balanced the Tigers are on both sides of the ball and how that's translated into an impressive season-long body of work", said committee chairman Kirby Hocutt of Clemson (11-1), the defending national champion. Washington, a two-loss team, appeared in the playoff last winter. They're followed by Oklahoma and Wisconsin as the other two teams would be in if the playoffs began today.
Sugar Bowl (CFP semifinal): No. 4 Wisconsin vs. CPI, a transparent stat more similar to what the committee uses, also has Bama ahead of UW. The Badgers (12-0) square off with No. 8 Ohio State (10-2) in Saturday's Big Ten title contest.
Clemson and Miami face off in the ACC title game with a playoff spot on the line, while Georgia and Auburn meet for the SEC crown with the same stakes. Some experts are putting Auburn all the way up to No. 1 after they beat Alabama 26-14 Saturday, but the Tigers have two losses.
Let's take a look at the top 25.
Dabo Swinney's bunch has wins over Auburn, Virginia Tech, NC State and SC, with a really bad loss against Syracuse.
Clemson (11-1) was the No. 1 team Tuesday, up two spots from last week.
The final rankings are set to be revealed at 11 a.m. Sunday on ESPN. 2 Ohio State, 31-16, and then-No. A Tigers loss in the SEC title game makes things more hard, but doesn't automatically knock Alabama out of the running. They also won at No. 2 Ohio State.
Penn State could potentially match up with the Pac-12 victor, creating a revenge opportunity vs. USC after a thrilling 2017 Rose Bowl. Stanford moved up six spots by beating Notre Dame while the Fighting Irish dropped six spots. Even with their one loss, they will redeem themselves against the only team that beat them.
