Slender Man Teaser Poster

The movie is set for a May 18 release. The studio just released a new Slender Man trailer along with a poster for the thriller which is based on a 2009 creepypasta Internet meme featuring the freakish character created by Victor Surge (real name: Eric Knudsen). Slender Man stars Joey King, Julia Goldani-Telles, Jaz Sinclair, Annalise Basso, and Javier Botet.

The studio released a trailer Wednesday.

Slender Man was actually a creepypasta created by Victor Surge, and has been the inspiration behind several memes and creepy stories online. According to The Hollywood Reporter, one such man is Bill Weier, the father of Anna Weier, who was one of the two 12-year-old girls who stabbed their classmate almost to death in Wisconsin in 2014. Despite being severely wounded and left for dead, the victim managed to crawl onto a road, where she was discovered by a cyclist. She survived the attack.

They admitted the crime to police but explained they had to kill her to protect their families from the Slender Man. Prosecutors have asked that Geyser should be given a sentence of at least 40 years in a mental institution. Last year's Beware The Slenderman documentary followed the story. Geyser's attorney, Anthony Cotton, has also declined to comment on the movie. At the end of the day, it's just a movie.

According to TIME, Weier tells the Associated Press that it's "absurd" that they would do a movie about Slender Man after the 2014 incident. He said local theaters shouldn't show it.

Slender Man got a little out of hand when the internet decided it was a good idea to link real life murders with the Slender Man.

Going with the hashtage #CanYouSeeHim, expect the hype machine to be fully ramped up for Slender Man in the next few months.
