The Oakland Raiders are preparing to pursue television analyst and former Raiders head coach Jon Gruden, according to ESPN. Gruden still has one broadcast to do for ESPN's coverage of Wild Card weekend, but after that it's expected that he'll be named the Raiders' new coach.
Before the 2014 National Football League draft, Jon Gruden sat down with Derek Carr to chat about the then-Fresno State QB's pedigree and growing up around the game. The Raiders also still have to interview candidates for the job and meet the requirements of the Rooney Rule. I don't know what's going to happen, Mike (Golic), I gotta be honest with you.
Still, Gruden has reportedly already started lining up a coaching staff. "I've known him for a while".
Gruden, who hasn't coached since 2008, owns a 95-81 career record, which includes going 38-26 during his first tenure with the Raiders. Del Rio had signed a four-year contract extension in February after Oakland ended a 13-year playoff drought with a 12-win season. Sunday after Oakland's loss to the Chargers in Week 17, Del Rio was sacked, on his way to his postgame press conference at that. "The opportunities and lack of production really not good enough, really disappointing".
Del Rio and Pagano are likely to be joined by several other sacked head coaches over the next couple of days.
"It's a results business, I understand", he told a press conference, his voice cracking.
Davis said in a statement that he appreciated Del Rios effort in building the foundation for the future and thanked his family for contributing to the community. The Raiders have been a disaster all season. Us as players, we need to do better.
Oakland fired head coach Jack Del Rio on Sunday. Following the Super Bowl run of his first season in charge, the Bucs never won another playoff game under Gruden. Instead he stressed his closeness with Del Rio. Gruden was later traded to the Buccaneers for four draft picks and cash after the 2001 season. Good thing Del Rio and Gruden have the same agent!
