Harding's ex-husband Jeff Gillooly was involved in the plot. But, according to Golden, that wasn't that case whatsoever. Harding also skated at the Olympics, finishing eighth.
There's no movie about her, but there is one about the people responsible for the attack, and Kerrigan isn't much more than a glorified footnote in it.
- Nancy Kerrigan responded to questions about the new movie, "I, Tonya", on Thursday and said she doesn't really care about the film. When she tried to leave the house during a conversation, Tonya claims that her mother threw a steak knife at her which pierced her forearm. She's been waiting for a way to tell the world that the abuse she endured was so much worse than they thought, that she was so much poorer than people could imagine.
But, it was a different story in Harding's case.
"Not right now", Kerrigan told Shaugnessy.
Harding and her mother have an estranged relationship.
You know that it's nearly factual yet gleefully bogus because Harding (played by a brilliant, dazzling and comically great Margot Robbie) and her blissful teen first-date/loser ex-husband Gillooly (Sebastian Stan) serve as the movie's bickering bookends. It would also be wrong to portray her as anything other than who she is. We were never trailer trash. "We had a handsome new trailer", said Ms Golden. "We've both got wonderful lives, and that should be all that matters".
From the very start, it was clear Harding wasn't just another ice princess. She said there wasn't a day of the week that she didn't get beaten.
"Sure. Why not?" Harding said. I would never wish that on anyone. Her story is she and Gillooly were planning to mail a letter to Kerrigan to scare her, but Gillooly and his partner in crime, Shawn Eckardt, took things too far.
Golden admitted one incident from the movie did occur.
Harding says her mother would beat her with anything available.
"I would have coffee and sometimes I would put brandy flavoring in it", Golden said. "Do you remember something that you've not said?'"
Harding said she wouldn't change a thing about her life. "Now, she's happily married". I've got my life.
Brodesser-Akner's astute character study seeks to understand its subject, not to deplore her, forgive her, or ridicule her.
Who is Tonya Harding?
So when it came to transforming her into the ideal likeness of figure skater Tonya Harding, stylists were tasked with not only bringing back the 90s, but changing Margot's runway looks into something more rink-ready. "But they were talking about skating, and, 'well maybe somebody should be taken out so then she can make it'". But Golden says that wasn't the case.
Nancy Kerrigan hasn't watched seen I, Tonya yet, so she has nothing to say about the movie. She's played to spine-tingling, hilarious perfection by Allison Janney (who, along with Robbie, should be a safe bet for an Oscar nomination). Janney won a Golden Globe award on January 7 for her portrayal of Golden.
