President Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump desperately sought Friday to quell a growing storm triggered by his reported description of African nations, Haiti and El Salvador as "shithole" countries, in a slur denounced as "racist" by the United Nations.

Jean, who was born in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince and is currently secretary general of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, called Trump's reported remarks "insulting".

The State Department was left scrambling to contain the damage, with a top official saying that - while Trump denies using the language attributed to him - diplomats had been briefed to convey Washington's respect if summoned to explain themselves, as they were in Haiti and Botswana.

"This is not just a story about vulgar language", he said.

Trump reportedly made the remarks at a White House meeting on immigration on Thursday.

"Trump has always been a racist, only a racist can use such foul language", said Nancy Mulenga, a student at the University of Zambia. So Graham and Durbin have been working tirelessly on a compromise bill that can win Republican and Democratic votes, and whether it can advance on Capitol Hill depends heavily on whether it receives Trump's blessing.

Ghana is widely seen as a stable, peaceful country in an often turbulent region, and has close ties to the United States.

Cuba's Foreign Ministry "strongly" condemned Friday night the "racist, denigrating and gross" statements by U.S. President Donald Trump on Haiti, El Salvador and African states.

To get through flu season, Quebec is spending $23.25 million to open 350 additional beds in Montreal and on the North and South Shores.

At one point, Trump, according to two sources, said: "Why do we want all these people from Africa here?"

When it came to talk of extending protections for Haitians, Mr Durbin said the president replied: "We don't need more Haitians". That's what this is really about.

In Montreal, Marjorie Villefranche, director of La Maison d'Haiti, a prominent cultural and community centre, called the president's views "ridiculous".

He later told the AP that Africa gave America the greatest president ever in Barack Obama. He has said Mexican immigrants were "bringing crime" and were "rapists".

"(The President) said things which were hate-filled, vile and racist.

But it wasn't what people had hoped for.

Durbin also recounted a "heartbreaking moment" when Trump and others "scoffed" at his comments about the importance of family-based immigration. He also blamed "both sides" after a white supremacist rally in August in Charlottesville, Virginia, turned violent and a woman protesting against the rally was killed.

Some acknowledged problems in their countries, but blamed this on their poor leaders as well as Western nations.

"The President's statement is shameful, abhorrent, unpresidential, and deserves our strongest condemnation". McCabe said he tried unsuccessfully to kick the button free before picking up a 1.5 kilogram (3.3 pound) black pudding, a form of blood sausage. He is due to provide a public briefing Tuesday.

Trump's request covers 74 miles of border wall as part of a 10-year, $18 billion proposal.

"Our nation's strength and the American Dream stem from our immigrant roots and diversity". But she added, "We feel like we're close".

The resolution was passed unanimously after four hours of discussions.

"How do six people bind the other 94 in the Senate?" "He said, 'Oh, that's a good line'". We're going to prepare our bipartisan agreement for introduction into the Senate next week.

I think it will have a tremendous impact on future litigation and pending litigation related to immigration.
