Amazon narrows down list to 20 cities for next major headquarters

Atlanta is among the top 20 cities left standing after the first cut for Amazon's HQ2, the e-commerce giant announced Thursday.

Most saw the news as reason to keep improving on many fronts.

The mayors said the intense six-week bidding process encouraged business and community leaders from both sides of the river to collaborate and put a spotlight on the strength of Ottawa's economy and the "world-class talent" that will ultimately draw other companies to set up shop in the region.

Even though the other 218 cities weren't chosen for consideration, Amazon said to not feel down. "Through this process, we're learning more about the type of talent we need to continue leading as we build an economy for the future". "The fact the Twin Cities is not on that list is a strong indication Amazon has bigger aspirations of working with Target in the future". Atlanta is also home to the third largest concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters in the country.

"We heard they weren't looking for anything in the Bay Area because of the cost, but, that said, at least we got looked at and that alone can have huge spin-off benefits". "So that's why we're going to work with the province of Ontario and other jurisdictions, and other communities as well to invest in more post-secondary institutions; to look at immigration and how we can bring more talent and have more opportunities for not only Amazon, but for other companies to scale and grow as well".

"Being on the east coast is positive", Fiorenza said.

And in neighboring New York, Alicia Glen, New York's deputy mayor for Housing and Economic Development, said she learned from Twitter on Thursday morning that the city had made the list. A global team of about 30 correspondents in New York, London, Hong Kong and other major cities provides expert analysis in real time. The list is made up of 20 locations including major hubs like NY and Chicago, along with surprising locations like Columbus, Montgomery County, and Maryland.

"We're able to attract the best and the brightest from around the world", Mr.

Turpin said he believes getting the Austin workforce trained and educated to fill some of those roles will be a "necessary ingredient" to support a player like Amazon in town.

Gov. Eric J. Holcomb said making it on the short list shows the Hoosier state's focus on being business friendly pays off. Worcester, Massachusetts, released invoices showing that it spent more than $10,500 on its proposal, most of it on a video. If Amazon came to Austin, where would the people who fill those new jobs come from? Indianapolis made the Top 20, while the city of Gary's did not.

"We could be killing the potential next Amazon by creating another Amazon [headquarters] here without looking at the implications of that". "I think it was important Winnipeg submit a bid".

The decision gives city leaders a list of ideas of areas for improvement should another opportunity like Amazon HQ2 come along.

In the St. Louis region's proposal, released Thursday, St. Clair County and the state of IL were listed as able to make $1.6 billion in incentives available for Amazon, based on the company bringing 50,000 jobs and developing 10 million square feet in buildings.
