Atlanta's spot on this list is a testament to our city's assets, including the strong working relationship between the City and the State. Hundreds of cities hoped Amazon would think outside the box, but a desire for talent and a welcoming environment led it to the usual hot spots.
Its first appearance came late past year when Google's sister company, Sidewalk Labs, was chosen by Toronto to build a futuristic waterfront community, Quayside, "from the internet up". When the unusual public contest was announced in September, it set off a public charm offensive by the applicants, with many local officials trying to entice Amazon with tax breaks and other benefits.
Texas State Sen. Royce West, D-Dallas, said state government will cooperate in developing an incentive package.
"The New York City metro area is the most diverse labor force that Amazon is going to be able to tap into". But numerous state and local governments competing for the headquarters have refused to disclose the tax breaks or other financial incentives they offered.
Kansas City's HQ2 proposal has not yet been made public, but it was a two-state, 15-county effort involving about 200 people.
"Cobb County has fantastic schools, and therefore would probably get a lot of amazon people moving out to the Cobb County area and all up and down the 400 corridor as well, those are popular places to live", said Turner.
Amazon provided little detail about how it pick the finalists for its second headquarters, which it is calling HQ2, other than to say it based it choices on the criteria it laid out for the search earlier.
