The Apple HomePod has been praised for having incredible audio quality, but spending more than $400 on a speaker you want to be able to use it for more than music streaming.

As for how much the components inside the Apple Homepod cost, the woofers, tweeter and microphones reportedly cost $58 (roughly Rs 3,700) combined. If so, that could hamper Apple's efforts to catch up to less expensive internet-connected speakers from Amazon and Google that had a head start in the still nascent market.

"Apple is compressing their margins a bit, wanting to go big or go home", Al Cowsky, TechInsight's costing manager, told Bloomberg. Or, it may not, according to Apple. The housing and other items are said to cost $25. A $349 original Apple Watch from 2015 was estimated by IHS to cost only $84 for the materials.

This is actually rather interesting, especially when you consider the fact that even the former CEO of Sonos admitted that the HomePods do sound better.

It must be noted that these are all just estimates, and should be taken with a pinch of salt.

It is worth noting at this point that Tim Cook claimed that third-party estimates are never accurate. HomePod also requires both two-factor authentication and iCloud Keychain to be turned on. Haselton emphasized that Siri, for example, can not make a call on the user's behalf, unlike Amazon Echo or Google Home.

However, the response has not been enough for early buyers who have expressed their outrage in social media and review sites, complaining that a product worth $350 shouldn't ruin a "prized piece of furniture". "It excels as a high-quality smart speaker for listening to Apple Music, but trails behind Amazon and Google when it comes to voice control", we wrote. The speaker is covered in mesh fabric with a hidden rubber foot beneath the device. Overall, ifixit rates the HomePod with a repairability score of just 1/10. That's because the company has revealed how much it will cost to fix the speaker if it's damaged - and it's extortionate.
