Samsung announces the Galaxy S9 with 'the most advanced camera ever'

They are mostly a confirmation of all the leaks posted earlier in the month by WinFuture.

The static design of the new Galaxy S9 underscores both the slowing pace of smartphone innovation and the extent to which other manufacturers, particularly Apple, have caught up with Samsung features that once stood out. The official launch date of the smartphone is set for March 16 in select markets. Advance orders begin this Friday. The Galaxy S9+ has dual camera with 12 MP camera sensor with f/2.4-f/1.5 variable aperture and 12 megapixels secondary camera sensor with f/2.4 aperture.

Basically, the automatic shooting mode will switch between these two apertures as you need them to-when lighting is low, it will automatically change to the f/1.5 aperture. In fact, were it not for the new fingerprint reader placement - now below the rear camera and in the centre of the phone, instead of off-centre, a placement many found annoying on the 2017 handsets - most people would not be able to tell the difference between them at first glance. According to Samsung, a recording of 0.2 seconds can be stretched to six seconds. It has also developed an answer to the animoji craze that gripped users in the wake of the iPhone X launch. The next-gen Samsung Dex Pad easily connects the two smartphones with the large screen and other platforms. This makes the S9 series 1.8 times louder than its predecessor. As the name suggests, the sensors on the smartphones can scan the contours of a human face to create animated emojis. This solves the problem numerous S8 and s8+ users had due to the position of fingerprint sensor placement. That makes the S9 slightly shorter, wider and thicker than the Galaxy S8. The phone will come in 64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB internal storage options. Both will ship with 64GB of storage and can be expanded by up to 400GB through the use of a microSD card.

Additional bells and whistles: The phones support IP68 (1.5 m & 30 min) water and dust resistance. The wide-angle camera has the f/1.5-2.4 dual aperture and the telephoto camera is a fixed f/2.4. There's a 5.8-inch Quad HD+ display on the Samsung Galaxy S9. Both the panels have 18:9 aspect ratio. The Galaxy S9 features 4GB of RAM and the Galaxy S9 Plus packs 6GB of RAM. It has the same basic look, with the "infinity display" that the S8 introduced. It has the same resolution as its smaller counterpart.

In addition, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ will come with the new SmartThings app, which unites Samsung's existing IoT services into one single, smart experience.

And the S9 camera has a geeky but impressive trick on its aperture, the opening where light comes in. Right from the camera app, you can switch between the two apertures easily.

The Galaxy S9 has fixed the poor sensor placement of the 2017 model.

Samsung explained that this is made possible through "a data-based machine learning algorithm, which analyses a 2D image of the user and maps out more than 100 facial features to create a 3D model that reflects and imitates expressions, like winks and nods, for true personalisation".

Both devices, again unsurprisingly, run the latest edition of Android 8.0 Oreo.
