All 16 Cobb high school principals were meeting with district staff today in a regular, previously scheduled meeting on a number of topics. He added students should be allowed to participate in the democratic process to display their opinions within an instructional, non-disruptive experience.

Ava Vaughan, a student at Chimacum Middle School, is one of the organizers of the event, and like her high school counterparts, she deemed the February 14 school shooting to be a turning point.

That same day, a memo was sent to parents indicating that they must give permission for their student to participate in the walk-out.

MCSD communications director Mercedes Parham told the Ledger-Enquirer, "The punishment would be determined by the school administrators, if that should arise". As long as things remain peaceful, Parker said, the walkout will be permitted. "I sincerely regret that my exuberance has caused such turmoil". But discussions are under way with student organizers.

"Student involvement with the "walkout" is by no means a District endorsement", Fulton wrote.

Some schools are not recognizing the walkout and plan to discipline students who participate, reports USAToday.

District staff encourage parents to speak with their children about possible protests and about school guidelines for attendance and absences.

Students all over the country have been taking a walk to take a stand.

The student was located by Union police and arrested at the time.

Vaughan explained that the Chimacum Middle School students plan to converge on the football field. He said students can participate without fear of penalty.

Palmer High School students held signs opposing violence and advocating kindness at a Wednesday, March 7, 2018 walkout.

Since the shooting in Florida that left 17 dead, efforts are starting to be made at the state and federal level on gun control.

When she heard about the national walkout and how schools locally could join, she chose to start organizing things at Big Foot.

Reporters asked if she had any specific examples in mind. "That is what we do here", said Kimzey.
