Ava Vaughan, a student at Chimacum Middle School, is one of the organizers of the event, and like her high school counterparts, she deemed the February 14 school shooting to be a turning point.
That same day, a memo was sent to parents indicating that they must give permission for their student to participate in the walk-out.
MCSD communications director Mercedes Parham told the Ledger-Enquirer, "The punishment would be determined by the school administrators, if that should arise". As long as things remain peaceful, Parker said, the walkout will be permitted. "I sincerely regret that my exuberance has caused such turmoil". But discussions are under way with student organizers.
"Student involvement with the "walkout" is by no means a District endorsement", Fulton wrote.
Some schools are not recognizing the walkout and plan to discipline students who participate, reports USAToday.
District staff encourage parents to speak with their children about possible protests and about school guidelines for attendance and absences.
