A month after Black Panther showcased black excellence in the form of a superhero movie, A Wrinkle in Time is hoping to do the same through a beloved American children's novel. "I wanted "Star Wars" to reflect on the world around us, all movies are starting to do it as well". However, despite the Marvel blockbuster being in its fourth weekend, the fantasy adventure could not dislodge T'Challa from the top of the box office.
"Black Panther" also took in $40.8 million at US and Canadian theaters, ComScore Inc.
Ryan Coolger-directed "Black Panther" has now surpassed the $1 billion mark worldwide, aided by earning $41.1 million this weekend.
"Black Panther" is the fifth Disney film in its Marvel universe to reach the $1 billions milestone. This is the highest-grossing movie with a black director, according to Fandango. There are remnants of a great movie here, with a talented cast and production group, but the pieces simply did not come together. The quote from Rumi that acts as a driving force throughout the film - "The wound is the place where the Light enters you", is something I needed to hear as my adult self. Awful reviews, a trailer that looked more bloated than substantial, and bad word of mouth all conspired to bring the wannabe-blockbuster below even that.
2. Disney targeted a younger audience instead of a wider one..
It's frustrating when people call a film a "kids movie" to mean your kid's too dumb to care that this movie has flaws.

3. The story didn't click.. In my local theater, the cinematic rendition of Madeleine L'Engle's book failed to evoke the same emotional response: there was not a single tear shed, but rather the occasional yawn. Toby Kebbell and Maggie Grace star in the film about thieves attempting to loot a U.S. Treasury facility as a big storm bears down.
4. And the marketing didn't help..
In short, the importance of A Wrinkle in Time can't be understated. I can attribute a lot of this to adaption fatigue, especially with the novel being such a heavy hitter narratively, it can often feel like it's only skimming the surface of what it wants to cover. Who is played by Mindy Kaling, who seems to be trying to steal every scene.
Her next film did much better: Selma, her dramatization of the 1965 march led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. from Selma to Montgomery, took in $66.8 million at the box office, and was nominated for the Oscar for Best Picture.
