Secretary of State Rex Tillerson ousted, replaced by Central Intelligence Agency chief Mike Pompeo

"I can tell you it's functioning very well from my perspective".

Current and former officials said Pompeo, 54, was likely to get along better with Congress and with the White House, not least because of his conservative bent. The news was not conveyed in person by Trump. "We stand by our closest ally and the special relationship that we have", she said without mentioning Russian Federation once.

Goldstein said, "We wish Secretary Pompeo well".

A US Senate report found that Ms Haspel ran a notorious Central Intelligence Agency prison in Thailand, where prisoners were waterboarded in 2002.

Mr Pompeo is a former hardline conservative Republican lawmaker from Kansas and a Trump loyalist.

Sen. Bob Corker, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in a statement that Mike Pompeo's confirmation hearing for secretary of state will be in April, but didn't specify a specific date.

Tillerson was committed to the deal, however, saying the USA would work with allies to address Trump's concerns.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo will take up the role, the President announced in a tweet.

More on this as it develops.

Pompeo is President Donald Trump's pick to replace Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

"Rex is a very good man, I like Rex a lot".

"Firing your secretary of state right before an unprecedented summit with North Korea is not smart and suggests Trump can not act strategically", said Jon Wolfsthal, who served as senior director for arms control and non-proliferation at the National Security Council under former President Barack Obama.

He further said that Tillerson will miss his colleagues at the State Department and the foreign ministers he worked with. "He is grateful for the opportunity to serve, and believes strongly that public service is a noble calling".

Two White House officials said Tillerson was told he was out on Friday. I know I will learn from them and, as President Trump set out in his State of the Union Address, work hard to ensure that "our nation will forever be safe and strong and proud and mighty and free".

Mr Pompeo issued a statement saying he was "looking forward" to representing the President.

"Instead of responding, silence has made these Islamic leaders across America potentially complicit in these acts, and more importantly still, in those that may well follow", Pompeo said.

It was also telling that the White House announced the personnel moves through an increasingly common playbook: A leak, a tweet and written statements from those involved.

"It came from Russia", Tillerson said, according to the Associated Press. "But this is a substance that is known to us and does not exist widely".

The reshuffle comes days after the spectacular announcement of a meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, whose date and details have yet to be determined. Pressuring North Korea with sanctions and other isolation measures had been a top Tillerson priority, and he had been one of the administration's more vocal advocates for holding talks in some form with the North.

Several months earlier in Beijing, Tillerson said the United States was directly communicating with North Korea but that Pyongyang had shown no interest in dialogue.
