The spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Tuesday the UN chief had no comment on U.S. President Donald Trump's ouster of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson but "looks forward to a positive relationship with the successor".

Tillerson had said earlier he would not quit his position, despite reports of disagreements with the White House.

Tillerson and Trump have butted heads in the past, most notably when reports of Tillerson describing Trump as "a moron" broke in October.

He praised allies in noting "we exceeded the expectations of nearly everyone with the DPRK maximum pressure campaign", and said that "much work remains to establish a clear view of the nature of our future relationship with China".

"I've worked with Mike Pompeo now for quite some time", Trump said Tuesday. "The relationship has been very good and that's what I need as Secretary of State".

In a reaction on Tuesday, the National Iranian American Council (NIAC), anxious openly that Trump's nomination of Pompeo "could have profound implications for the fate of the Iran nuclear deal and the prospect of a new war in the Middle East". When you look at the Iran deal: I think it's bad.

During his 14 months at the State Department, Tillerson had numerous policy differences with Trump - and the friction frequently played out in public.

Tillerson's firing came barely four hours after he returned to Washington from a trip to Africa that he had cut short, telling reporters that he was exhausted after working most of the night two nights in a row and getting sick in Ethiopia.
