"The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge". Working with Jim Hartle of the University of California, Santa Barbara, Hawking proposed in 1983 that space and time might have no beginning and no end. His character was an inspiration to millions.
The message of this lecture is that black holes ain't as black as they are painted.
"There is no god. Which there isn't. I'm an atheist". "The wheelchair gives me away". In a way, he was like a brand ambassador - a person who made the connection between consumers and products. "While there's life, there is hope".
"I wouldn't compare it to sex, but it lasts longer". It reached 25,000mph. To travel in time we'll have to go more than 2,000 times faster than that.
"Life would be tragic if it weren't funny".
"I was hoping a future Miss Universe was going to step through the door". Hawking's pre-recorded speech, "Stephen Hawking Global Citizen", a feature on the Innocence + Experience tour, achieved the desired result.
Hawking: "Yes. And also a universe where you're funny". Not one of his theories has been confirmed by observation; several have been debunked.
As mentioned in The Guardian, Hawking was diagnosed with a terminal disease known as ALS or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis when he was 21. "It is a matter of chance which we are in". "Don't be disabled in spirit as well as physically".
Of course, human civilization would likely collapse well before we had Venus-level warming. Anyone who listens to him or reads his work can understand his work at ease.
Yet it soon emerged that Hawking's favoured candidate - something called N = 8 Supergravity - had profound problems. Despite famously containing just one equation - Einstein's famous E = Mc^2 [[squared]] - it also has a reputation for being the most unread best-seller of all time. - in his first Reddit AMA.
In 2004, he announced that he had revised his previous view that objects sucked into black holes simply disappeared, perhaps to enter an alternate universe. But he was also a critic of the direction mankind was taking, as we'll see...
"The first thing that catches you is the debilitating disease and his wheelchair", Turner said. He typed the words, selecting letters one-by-one from the menu, and then the voice processor would speak the words. With the technology at our disposal, the possibilities are unbounded.
"I think it would be a disaster".
Queen Elizabeth II sent a message of condolence to Hawking's family, Buckingham Palace said. "I think we should keep our heads low".
"Scientists have been studying many factors that could be linked with ALS, such as heredity and environmental exposures", the CDC says. "So where did a leading TV company find the 'Editorial Producer' who just invited to me 'to talk to us about the life and legacy of your colleague Richard Hawkins'?" Writing in her autobiographical "Music to Move the Stars", she said the strain of caring for Hawking for nearly three decades had left her feeling like "a brittle, empty shell".
"What could define God (is thinking of God) as the embodiment of the laws of nature. When you look at the vast size of the universe and how insignificant an accidental human life is in it, that seems most impossible". The response is usually, "ah, that's cool!" "I really didn't quite notice my body, I was so absorbed in scientific work".
