The Champions League quarter-finals features four of the top five clubs in terms of revenue, with only Manchester United missing out. He was critical of Manchester United's recent record in European competition and less than complimentary (and arguably, correct) in his assessment of the quality of his own players compared to the current best teams in Europe (and also to Manchester City).

"We went out to a side that's more successful than Manchester United in last seven years in Europe", said Mourinho. It was too little too late. "I'm happy we were on exactly the same page", said Mourinho. Man Utd are improving again, but we aren't as good as you think'.

As Mourinho walked towards the tunnel after the final whistle, he was met with a mixture of jeers and applause from the Stretford End.

United were beaten 2-1 on aggregate by Sevilla on Tuesday night and after the match Lukaku, who scored his team's goal on the night, said that some players were "hiding". The Old Trafford outfit started the 2017/18 season with so much promise, having made huge investments, but are yet to really reap the benefits. These fans let their feelings known and booed him.

Paul Merson believes Liverpool will eventually jump ahead of Manchester United into second place in the Premier League this season.

Martial's inclusion was popular among United fans...

They managed just four shots on target in 180 minutes against a team that has conceded 42 league goals this season.

Mourinho paused briefly before suggesting he is playing catch-up with Manchester City because Pep Guardiola inherited a better squad when he took over at the Etihad Stadium. But it's still not bright enough.

The FA Cup is now United's only hope of securing silverware with Brighton the visitors to Old Trafford on Saturday - a match which will bring back memories of the club's 1983 final success.

Midfield: Paul Pogba was criticised for his performance after coming off the bench during the Champions League defeat to Sevilla in midweek but I still think we could see the French global recalled in midfield.

What he meant: 'Fans need to calm their expectations for now.

And if Mourinho is courageous enough to deploy the same negative tactics on Saturday, he better pray that it pays off.

To the fans - 'We aren't as good as the great Manchester United sides of the past, so lower your expectations for now.
