The Champions League quarter-finals features four of the top five clubs in terms of revenue, with only Manchester United missing out. He was critical of Manchester United's recent record in European competition and less than complimentary (and arguably, correct) in his assessment of the quality of his own players compared to the current best teams in Europe (and also to Manchester City).

Mourinho paused briefly before suggesting he is playing catch-up with Manchester City because Pep Guardiola inherited a better squad when he took over at the Etihad Stadium. But it's still not bright enough.

So in the last four years the best was fourth. For any other manager it would hang over the rest of their career, the clearest reminder that elite football has passed them by.
