After finding answers to every problem during their 14-game winning streak, the Wolverines' final test of the season had been just too tough.
They really were just a better team than everybody in 2017-18, but they quite possibly were more than that.
For the second time in three years, the top-seeded Wildcats are national champions in men's college basketball, knocking off No. 3 MI 79-62 in front of 67,831 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
And it wasn't just the final matchups where Catholic colleges dominated.
But the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers and their beloved Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt were the biggest story of the tournament.
It was a team unlike any John Beilein had coached at MI.
By the time the final buzzer - which was an unusually ugly noise - sounded he and the Wildcats stood amid the shower of confetti and Villanova was crowned as one of blue bloods, having now won two championships in three years and the Wildcats did it the old-fashioned way.
Donte DiVincenzo's last 24 hours have been a whirlwind, but he should know that his performance in Monday night's NCAA Championship game caught the eye of LeBron James. But Wright has job security that is unrivaled this side of Coach K, Jim Boeheim, Tom Izzo and the like, with the possibility of further elevating into legendary status as a still relatively young man (56 years old). This one was only handsome to one team.
Augustinian Father Rob Hagan, who is chaplain of the Villanova men's team, was a student at the university when the Wildcats won the 1985 championship.
"This is a great part of life", he added. "He was getting into the lane, and-ones, backdoors, lobs".
"It's a wonderful opportunity to minister", he said.
"But the best team won and I'm actually happy they won a little bit because we don't really speak that other team's name around here".
Yet even DiVincenzo, the Final Four's Most Outstanding Player who steamrolled MI with a run of 10 straight points late in the first half and another burst of nine straight points in the second half, pointed to his defense as the most satisfying factor. He was named most outstanding player of the Final Four in this year's NCAA tournament. Villanova guard Jalen Brunson, the AP Player of the Year, was in foul trouble and finished with nine points.
Neumann-Goretti High School product Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree, also a freshman, contributed limited time in which he grabbed a rebound.
He played for a Catholic school, Salesianum, which he led to two state championships and was named the DE player of the year after his senior season.
The win not only capped a 36-4 campaign for Villanova, it also capped one of the great three-season runs in college basketball history.
Wright has remained committed to Villanova through previous interest from the National Basketball Association.
The college basketball season is over.
Ken Cross, the self-proclaimed "CEO of College Hoops", has a plethora of experience over a 20-plus year period in both print and broadcast journalism as a free-lancer on the east coast and in the Charlotte, NC area, in particular. "They can do everything, moving off the ball, coming off ball screens".
"Honestly, I think that helped us", Booth told Sporting News.
We had an excuse for not recognizing the Wildcats' greatness until it nearly was too late: Villanova wasn't Villanova until the end.
