The Delhi Daredevils top order had fallen away dramatically with Prithvi Shaw (22) and Rahul Tewatia (24) the only other men to pass twenty.
Result: Kings XI won by 4 runs. In fact, the game overall was devoid of much excitement except the last over.
So, came to chase the score, KXIP scored 126 runs in 11.1 overs by losing only 1 wicket. None of the Delhi batsmen barring Shreyas Iyer (57), showed the intent to occupy the crease and score the needed runs, as Delhi could not chase a not so steep target of 144 runs. But Mujeeb Ur Rahman castled Pant (4), and Agarwal and Ashwin ran out Christian (6). Iyer gives up the single on the next delivery before picking up a couple on the 4 delivery.
Delhi Daredevils will be hosting their first game of the season against Kings XI Punjab.
So, will R Ashwin lead KXIP to a morale-boosting win or will Gambhir's Daredevils climb up from the bottom of the table? So who will win tonight?
Andrew Tye (2/25) continued to prove his worth in the shortest format while Ankit Rajpoot (2/23) was the pick of the bowlers.
Highly-rated English cricketer Jofra Archer impressed on his IPL debut with a three-wicket haul while Karnataka all-rounder Krishnappa Gowtham played a blinder to help the Royals snatch a win from the jaws of defeat. On Monday, after Gayle was ruled out, they suddenly appeared to have lost their touch. Two catches dropped in two overs. But KXIP failed to take the advantage of that.
The Debut: Making his IPL debut for the Daredevils, England white-ball specialist Liam Plunkett looked right at home in front of the Delhi crowd from the outset. Kings XI, eventually, lost four wickets in their last four overs while scoring just 27 runs. By the end of the sixth over, the seamers had struck three crucial blows. Punjab would try and work on their pace bowling department a little bit- their least effective department so far.
However, the margin of defeat would've been a lot bigger had it not been for some positive performances from individuals such as Shreyas Iyer, Liam Plunkett and Daniel Christian. While he took the important wickets of KL Rahul (23), Mayank Agarwal (21) and Karun Nair (34), his colleagues Trent Boult (2/21) and Avesh Khan (2/36) also backed skipper Gambhir's decision to bowl first with some tidy bowling. It started with the dismissal of Finch in the second over - he looked in tearing hurry and tried to pull. Daredevils needed 17 off the last over, and five off the last ball, but Iyer could only find Aaron Finch at long-off.
