South Korea's liberal government, elected past year, has reached out to North Korea in recent months in attempting to settle the worldwide standoff over Kim's nuclear program. "For now, I can only say there's a need to confirm whether these claims are true".

And the North's foreign ministry said the ceremony for the occasion has been scheduled for between May 23 and 25, depending on weather conditions.

North Korean leader Kim Jun Un said he would shut down his country's only known nuclear test site and allow journalists to watch the process if the United States commits to a formal end to the Korean War.

South Korean officials have said the downsising of the competition is related to improved relations between the two countries after the inter-Korean summit held on April 27.

With North Korea pledging to close down its nuclear test site as a part of its own denuclearization efforts, the focus is on how the shutdown process will unfold. The newspaper noted that the Economist's estimate was almost 75 percent of South Korea's entire gross domestic product when the piece was published.

But since the Pyeongchang Games, Pyongyang and Washington have agreed to the unprecedented Singapore meeting, and Kim has twice visited China to meet President Xi Jinping, after not paying respects in the six years since he inherited power from his father.

Most recently, the US posed sanctions on North Korea when Kim refused to stop testing his nuclear weapons. However, there are lingering doubts about whether Kim would ever agree to fully relinquish the weapons he likely views as his only guarantee of survival.

The goal of the visit to Pyongyang Pompeo called "complete and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

However, the North has remained one of the world's most isolated states and its outdated economy has been further battered by a UN-backed "maximum pressure" campaign of sanctions.

Seismic waves from a nuclear test in North Korea. "The nuclear test and the intercontinental ballistic missile test will be discontinued", state media reported.

But both Washington and Seoul - longtime treaty allies - cooperate closely and also confer with the North's larger neighbor China, which has a stake in the outcome. In another sign of improving relations, North Korea this week released three US citizens who had been imprisoned in the country. The North Korean regime is "adopting technical measures to dismantle Norrn nuclear test ground of DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea, official name of north) to ensure transparency of interruption of evidence", Added.

To search for clues, Teng Wang at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and his colleagues studied German satellite images of North Korea's Punggye-ri nuclear testing site at Mount Mantap.

Pompeo's second trip to North Korea, this time officially as secretary of state, was remarkably productive. "Is he rational"? Yes, we had good conversations, substantive conversations, conversations that involve deep, complex problems, challenges the strategic decision that Chairman Kim has before him about how it is he wishes to proceed and if he is prepared in exchange for the assurances that we're ready to provide to him if he is prepared to fully denuclearise.
