In the Fallout lore, Vault 76, where Fallout 76 is supposed to take place is a "control" vault, with 500 occupants. According to the in-game lore, Vault 76 is one of Vault-Tec's "control vaults", created to be one of the first to open up to the outside world 20 years after the 2077 apocalypse. For instance, Kotaku's Jason Schreier has heard Fallout 76 will be "an online game of sort".
Survive in a world set shortly after the nuclear war.
The year 1776 is significant to the United States as the official beginning of its nationhood, as any Wartonian knows. That also opens up more land on which players can build.
Going back to the title, though, it's immediately clear this won't be a mainline entry.

This comes from anonymous sources, who claim that the game is an experimental version of the usual single-player gameplay you see in Fallout. This suggests that the inhabitants of Vault 76 had been preparing to go out into the wasteland and start rebuilding it, which gives us a rough idea of the what kind of wasteland we'll exploring. Listings for Fallout 76 have now surfaced across several major US retailers, with preorders already accepted for the title on Xbox One and Windows PCs. Whether that is just simple co-op or something else entirely remains to be seen. We'll find out more at E3.
