United Kingdom govt drops plan for 'meaningful vote' on Brexit deal - Labour

City A.M. has been told ministers were not briefed on the figures ahead of a critical Brexit war Cabinet

Over the past 24 hours there were veiled threats that the Secretary of State for Exiting the EU, David Davis, might resign if a deadline was not set on the extension of customs arrangements. The government said in the proposal it "expects" to get a withdrawal agreement by the end of December 2021.

Launching the roadmap in Westminster, Best For Britain chief executive Eloise Todd said: "A people's vote will be held before the end of March 2019". He said a backstop that is temporary is not a backstop.

The backstop solution at the heart of the Brexit talks is due to snap into place to avoid a hard Irish border should an adequate free trade deal or technological answer not be in place by the end of the transition period at the end of 2020. 'It would not in reality offer people the option of reversing the original decision to leave the European Union'. Those changes include core Brexit issues such as whether Britain should leave the EU's single market and customs union. Some politicians say any return of border controls could disrupt a peace agreement to reduce sectarian conflict in the north. He also made clear he would not let London use an offer of special access to the European Union market for produce from Northern Ireland to secure similar terms for all British goods.

And a day after Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson was recorded saying the United Kingdom was ready to take a more combative approach to negotiations, Mr Barnier said he would not be intimidated by Britons seeking to blame Brussels for their inability to secure the Brexit they want.

He said the campaign would accept the outcome of any referendum but it was "time for the truth and nothing but the truth" on Brexit, rather than "false facts" on the side of buses and "project fear".

The Pound was quoted 0.41% lower at 1.3360 against the US Dollar following the press conference, deepening an earlier 0.15% loss, while the Pound-to-Euro rate was 0.03% higher at 1.1379 after paring back an earlier 0.19% gain.

"Irrespective of the news flow we are still in the same position". Yet with less than ten months to go until the country is set to leave the European Union, we have nothing agreed and there is every prospect of another flunked summit at the end of this month. However, this was rejected by Mrs May's minority government, who are reliant on support from Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

Asked if he could stay in his job if the Government's backstop proposals did not have his explicit approval, Mr Davis said: "That's a question I think for the Prime Minister to be honest".

Ahead of the Best for Britain launch, former Labour MP Gisela Stuart, chairman of pro-Brexit group Change Britain, told a BBC discussion on Cabinet Brexit divisions that people were too focused on what ministers said and did.
