At one location, at least two Palestinians fired guns at an army post, while others threw grenades or used helium balloons and kites to fly explosives over the border, the army said.

Messi is wildly popular in the occupied Palestinian territories and in Gaza, where kids parade around in his jerseys like so many other places in the world.

The Health Ministry said a Palestinian, identified as Ziad Jadallah al-Breem, 27, was killed by Israeli army fire east of Khuza'a town, east of Khan Younis, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip.

The Edinburgh MP received a standing ovation when he called on United Kingdom arms sales to Israel, which were worth £320m from 2014-17, should end until there is evidence that arms are not being used by the Israelis in their siege of Gaza.

Organisers in Gaza said that the protests will continue in the coming days and weeks. They pledged to continue raising voice for rights of oppressed Palestinians and rejecting nefarious designs of Israel and United States against people in various parts of the world including Palestine. Two-thirds of Gaza's 2 million residents are descendants of refugees.

More than 700,000 Palestinians were expelled or fled in the 1948 Mideast war over Israel's creation. There have been no Israeli casualties. "One of the most popular players in the world, who has a billion followers - there is no question that the right thing is for him to play in Jerusalem", she said of Messi while speaking to reporters.
