Security is tight ahead of the summit between two unpredictable men who in the past have threatened to destroy the other's country during the stand-off over North Korea's nukes. Trump hopes the landmark talks will kick-start a process that eventually see Kim give up his nuclear weapons in an irreversible manner that can be verified internationally.
While advisers say Trump has been reviewing briefing materials, the president insists his gut instincts will matter most when he gets in the room with Kim.
North Korea had also threatened to strike Guam, an American territory in the Pacific Ocean.
The meeting between Kim and Trump will mark a turnaround of relations between the two leaders after a long-running exchange of furious threats and insults.
The discussions between the United States and North Korea are ongoing and have moved more quickly than expected.
Iran said North Korea should be wary of negotiating with Mr Trump following his withdrawal from the landmark 2015 nuclear agreement. It will be hard to live up to an April tweet in which he declared, "We haven't given up anything & they have agreed to denuclearization", as if the ultimate deal were already done.
