There's wild speculation about how Kim will perform on the world stage, although one question was answered Sunday: His grim-faced, well-muscled bodyguards marched alongside his armored limousine at one point in Singapore, just as they did when he met the South Korean leader in April.
Kim was the first to arrive in Singapore, landing at Changi airport on a commercial Air China plane, after intense speculation with the public tracking three separate aircraft leaving Pyongyang, the North Korean capital.
Kim remained ensconced in the heavily guarded St. Regis Hotel where he is staying.
"I'm unconcerned about our capacity to continue to do what we need to do".
A complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization "is the only outcome that the United States will accept", Pompeo told reporters on Monday evening in Singapore.
Similar scenes were seen on Sunday when Kim and Trump arrived in the city, and when Kim went to meet Lee.
The US was prepared to offer certainty to North Korea so they could be "comfortable that denuclearisation isn't something that ends badly for them".
A Trump administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the US side was entering the talks with a sense of optimism and an equal dose of scepticism given North Korea's long history of developing nuclear weapons.
"I bet the North will not abandon nuclear weapons", he said, adding that the U.S. and its allies should use both "carrots and sticks" to force the North to do so.
Kim Jong Un will undoubtedly get a sense of all that as he arrives. He released a photograph from inside the room of North Korean vice foreign minister Choi Sun-hee smiling across the table at the U.S. lead negotiator, the Philippines ambassador Sung Kim.
Besides, Singapore's prime minister "wished Chairman Kim success for the US-DPRK Summit and expressed hope that the US-DPRK meeting will advance the prospects for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and the larger region".
Trump insisted last week that the summit will "not be just a photo op", saying it will help forge a "good relationship" that would lead to a "process" toward the "ultimate making of a deal". It started with significant diplomatic overtures from North Korea towards South Korea during the Winter Olympics.
But Trump - for whom a major accomplishment would bolster his position ahead of midterm elections in November - baffled observers when he said he did not think he had to prepare "very much" for the summit.
But it was only Monday morning in North Korea that the government news agency reported that Kim was in Singapore, had met with the prime minister and would meet Trump on Tuesday.
"I am on a mission of peace and we're going to be carrying the hearts of millions of people from all", he said.
First the nuts and bolts: How do you protect what many North Koreans consider their single most precious resource, the third member of the Kim family to rule and a direct descendant of North Korea's worshipped founder Kim Il Sung?
The limousine of Kim Jong Un arrives at the Istana, or Presidential Palace, in Singapore on June 10, 2018, to meet Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong ahead the summit between USA leader Donald Trump and North Korea leader Kim. And even if North Korea agrees to dismantle all of its nuclear weapons, what's to say it won't make more now that it has the formula?
Trump's North Korean counterpart had also attended a meeting with PM Lee at the Istana yesterday for a half-hour session.
"It's never been done before", Trump said of a U.S.
